In some places in Latin America, such as Mexico, the celebration of Three Kings Day (January 6, also known as “Los Magos de Oriente”) is a tradition, although it is not a very active tradition in Guatemala. However, this date is present on the table of Guatemalan homes

The traditional making of this sweet bread dates back to the Middle Ages and it was in our neighboring country, Mexico, that it took deep root. The recipe is made in honor of Los Magos de Oriente, who are mentioned in the book of Saint Matthew. They, guided by a star, came to the Christ Child (Jesus Child) to worship him and brought him three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The consumption and production of roscón de Reyes (King's Sweet Bread) has now been declining. Today there are few pastry shops and bakeries that maintain this centuries-old tradition. We want to contribute to this tradition by sharing this simple, but delicious recipe that closes the Christmas festivities.

Ingredients by Steps

Note that this makes a small bread for 4 people

  • 5 grams of yeast
  • 1 spoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 of cup of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup of milk
  • Orange zest
  • Lemon zest
  • 1/3 cup of butter
  • 1/4 of cup of vegetable shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 of cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of flour
  • Crystallized fruit

Instructions

Step 1 : Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Mix the yeast with the sugar and warm water, mix the ingredients well and let it rest until it doubles in volume.

Step 2 : Now, mix the flour, sugar, the yeast mixture (which we just made), the eggs, milk, butter, orange and lemon zest. Blend well until you get a dough, hit the dough against the table several times while kneading it until it is smooth, elastic, soft and no longer sticky.

Step 3 : Let the dough rest in a place at room temperature and covered with a damp cloth. The volume of the dough will double. With your hands, roll out the dough into a "thread" or ring shape on a greased tray. Let it rest again at room temperature and covered with a damp cloth.

Step 4 : For the sweet bread decoration, mix the vegetable shortening with the sugar and flour all together and then set aside for a while. Meanwhile beat the egg and glaze the dough with it.

Step 5 : Spread the sugar mixture over the dough and top with small pieces of crystallized fruit. Bake for an hour or until golden brown. And that’s it !.
